About ta-tum
Tatami have always been with Japanese people. Even now, floors are covered with tatami mats in a traditional Japanese house.
Of course, most rooms Japanese live in today have wooden floors like Western rooms. However, Japanese lay “ta-tum” on a wooden floor to create an elegant space full of classical Japanese atmosphere. This way of using “ta-tum” is similar to the original way of using tatami. Before tatami was used to cover an entire floor of a room, tatami had been used to cover only a special part of a Japanese style wooden floor, itano-ma. Tatami used to be used as mattresses or mats to sit on for higher people. Furthermore, the thickness of tatami and the design of the border material of tatami showed the social status of those who sit on tatami. There are “ta-tum” of varied colors so that it can express elegance and the different seasons.
“Ta-tum” is a modern tatami. “Ta-tum” has inherited tatami’s favorable features. When we walk on “ta-tum” without shoes, we can feel as if we are walking on grass. There exist on “ta-tum” flawless SUBERI and TOMARI, with which people can behave elegantly on tatami. GEIKO, which are a kind of dancer born from culture in ancient capital Kyoto, can dance beautifully on “ta-tum” even when blindfolded, by feeling the SUBERI and TOMARI. The way people behave is very important in traditional Japanese culture.
The reflection direction of light on surfaces of “ta-tum” depends on their stitch pattern. Thus, “ta-tum” slightly vary in color depending on how to arrange them. When some “ta-tum” with the same color are laid on different directions, a checker board pattern can be created, the room is given not only a simple beauty but also a sense of depth and visual texture of “ta-tum”.
“Ta-tum” can be used, because of their fineness, in an art gallery where art objects, flowers or the like are exhibited. There is an alcove called tokono-ma in a traditional Japanese room with tatami mats. In non-Japanese style rooms, “ta-tum” plays the same role.
Using “ta-tum” with the same color at one time, and using “ta-tum” with different colors at other times, you can create a Japanese style space according to your preference.
Also, “ta-tum” is functional and modern furniture. “Ta-tum” are harmless to humans because they are made from polypropylene. “Ta-tum” are allergy-free. You can safely put babies directly on “ta-tum”. “Ta-tum” have greater cushioning characteristics and are washable with water. Therefore, “ta-tum” are most suitable to be laid in childrens rooms. In Japan, “ta-tum” received the “KIDS DESIGHN AWARD” in 2007.
“Ta-tum” can be arranged outdoors because of their high resistance to water exposure, allowing one to create a Japanese style space in the garden.
